How to select the right massage for you!

So, here’s the thing, a massage can either be your 90min out of body trip to heaven with angels singing and an overwhelming feeling of joy and fulfillment washing over your body, or, it could be 90 mins of torture that you pray could come to an end as soon as possible.
What you feel, depends on two major factors, the type of massage you pick, and, the therapist you choose to have! Whether you are a client in the waiting or a regular client, here’s some info on our traditional massages so you know what they all entail!
PART ONE: TRADITIONAL MASSAGES
Since 1269, the Swedish have been the front runners of the wellness industry. It’s no wonder that they have a massage made and named after them. A Swedish massage is the best introduction to the world of massage. It involves long, flowing strokes throughout the body, made in the direction of the heart. With some gentle kneading, vibrating and tapping, circular motions are made on the uppermost layers of the muscles and surface of the body. Although a gentle massage, it is important to note that gentle is relative according to each person so make sure to tell your therapist the kind of pressure you would like so as to avoid discomfort. It is also very important to advise the therapist in your consultation if you bruise easily!
2. Hot stone massage (75 – 90mins)
A wonderful natural therapy beneficial on both physical and psychological levels. Heated basalt stones are positioned on parts of the body to promote deep relaxation and help warm up tight muscles. The high iron content in our basalt stones help retain heat for longer during the massage. The heat is beneficial in assisting the therapist to work well into the muscle tissue to help release toxins and increase lymphatic drainage. This massage soothes aching joints, is ideal to ease muscle tension, alleviate pain and stress, and improve blood flow in your body. Hot stone massage may relieve more muscle tension than a Swedish massage because of the added heat.
3. Aromatherapy massage (Min 90mins)
Aromatherapy Massage is the classic therapy for relaxation. It is particularly suited to conditions involving emotional or physical stress. Enhance your physical, mental and emotional well being with a choice of natural essential oils to cater to your needs. The emotional healing that the different aromatherapy combinations can give, include reducing stress and anxiety and reducing symptoms of depression.
The benefits also extend to the physical by relieving muscle tension and pain. Aromatherapy massage is the most popular of the Tumi Wellness services due to its all-round benefits. This massage allows you to share with your therapist what you are going through mentally and physically in the consultation. The therapist can then blend the essential oils to specifically suit your needs. Do let your therapist know during the consultation if you have any allergies or find yourself particularly sensitive to smells. Due to the use of essential oils that could alter the smell of your body, we would recommend that nursing mothers inform the therapist beforehand, so milder scented oils such as chamomile can be used.
4. Deep tissue massage (60mins)
This is often a favorite amongst men and sporty individuals! This highly effective treatment is both corrective and therapeutic. It helps to release chronic muscle tension with the focus on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints). We use traditional deep tissue techniques to improve blood flow, soothe muscle aches and ease tension. The therapist will use slow strokes and deep finger pressure. This is not a massage for the faint hearted and those sensitive to pressure! With all massages, if the pressure becomes unbearable, do not hesitate to tell your therapist immediately.
5. Couple’s massage (60-90mins)
A couple’s massage is a massage that you do with your partner, friend, or family member in the same room. You can usually choose which type of massage you’d like to receive from our list of Tumi Wellness massages, and you and your partner can each get a different type of massage depending on your preference and body needs. Your partner and you will be on the massage tables’ side-by-side, and you’ll each have your own massage therapist working on your body. This massage is best to do with someone with whom you have a close or intimate relationship with, given that you will have to strip down to enjoy the massage.
